Why is it called the Newaygo?

A tribute to the historic rail legacy and gravel adventure of the Laurentian. The name Newaygo honors the history of the Corridor aérobique, a 58 kilometre linear park in the Laurentians that was once part of an active railway line connecting communities across the region. The rail service ran passenger trains, including the last one in 1962, through valleys and along Lac Saint-François-Xavier before the tracks were removed and the corridor converted into a recreational trail in 1996.

Newaygo itself refers to a former railway station and surrounding area along this route, a place that embodies movement, transition, and the spirit of exploration along this iconic gravel corridor. In that sense, the name also carries a personal meaning, “a new way to pass, go,” capturing the essence of discovery and forward motion that gravel riding represents.
